Making A Life is a new book by Melanie Falick with photography by Rinne Allen. In making the beautiful book, Melanie travelled across the globe to meet quilters and potters, weavers and painters, metalsmiths, printmakers, woodworkers and asked them all an important question “Why is making by hand important?”
Melanie visited the Chateau and we discovered we were kindred spirits. While she was here she took part in a shibori class and we talked for hours about the importance of making. She shared her ideas on the creative journey of the book and told me that she wanted to include a piece about Chateau Dumas. I’m honoured to be part of such an illustrious mix of artists, some who have taught at the Chateau, including Alabama Chanin, Lotta Jansdotter, Mandy Pattullo, Claire Wellesly-Smith and Annemarie O’Sullivan.
Melanie asked me the question and I wanted to share my answer with you.
Why is making by hand important to you?
Working by hand calms my mind and connects me to something that’s real and true. I choose hand stitching as a meditation and an escape to a place of peace. For me, the journey is more important than the destination...
