Recycle, Repair and Reconsider
with Mandy Pattullo & Selvedge Magazine
Saturday 8-15 August 2020
Join textile artist Mandy Patullo for a week of relaxed hand stitching where you’ll build beautiful artworks using locally sourced French finds.
In 2020 Mandy returns to Chateau Dumas to share her new approaches to textile collaging using historical textiles and techniques. Her work relates to the thrift and ‘make do and mend’ culture of past times, in particular utility patchworks and quilts made by women in domestic settings. She’ll share her latest passion for combining cross stitch patterns taken from old samplers with the unpicking of old quilts.
Mandy’s technique of adapting drawings from early American needlework patterns will help you to develop your ability to use embroidery imaginatively, sometimes combining it with appliqué. During the week she will show you how to display and use fragments of antique lace within the format of an artist’s book.
There will also be a woad dyeing day and you are encouraged to bring a garment, or purchase one from a local market or from Fabienne, a dealer in vintage textiles who will visit us during the week. Mandy will demonstrate how to work the garment using less structured stitching, as well as with patching and darning techniques inspired by Boro textiles.
On Sunday morning we will visit the atmospheric food and craft market in the medieval town of St Antonin Noble Val which was used as the backdrop to the films “Charlotte Grey” and “The Hundred Foot Journey”.
