This month I was excited to receive Making A Life, a new book by Melanie Falick with beautiful photography by Rinne Allen.
In making the beautiful book, Melanie travelled across the globe to ask artists and designers an important question... Why is making by hand important? Melanie visited the Chateau and we discovered we were kindred spirits. While she was here she took part in a shibori class and we talked for hours about the importance of making. She shared her ideas on the creative journey of the book and told me that she wanted to include a piece about Chateau Dumas. I’m honoured to be part of such an illustrious mix of artists, some who have taught at the Chateau, including Alabama Chanin, Lotta Jansdotter, Mandy Pattullo, Claire Wellesley-Smith and Annemarie O’Sullivan.
It lead me to ask myself why making by hand is important to me and here's my answer...
Working by hand calms my mind and connects me to something real and true. I choose hand stitching as a meditation and an escape to a place of peace. For me, the journey is more important than the destination.
We'd love to hear why working with your hands is important to you. Please leave a comment below with your answer.
