CREATIVE WORKSHOPS AT CHATEAU DUMAS IN 2012

Our philosophy at Chateau Dumas is simple: to make your workshop experience the best it can possibly be. You can expect quality in everything you experience during your stay with us from first-class teaching and delicious, homemade meals to elegant accommodation and friendly, helpful staff.

The focus of the week is on the tuition which takes place in our large, well-equipped studio in the Coach House   We also enjoy showing you a little of what our Quercy region has to offer so  studio sessions may be broken up with a visit to a market, medieval hilltop village or local hat factory. Sometimes we even organise our own brocante and invite local antique dealers to set up their stalls in our grounds.

There are plenty of opportunities to relax at Chateau Dumas and enjoy the 22 acres of beautiful grounds, large swimming pool and lovely local walks. We look forward to welcoming you on an inspirational workshop at Chateau Dumas in 2012.

MILLINERY: BEGINNERS with Dillon Wallwork
7-14 JULY 2012

Millinery is an art which is difficult to learn by yourself.  To make real progress you need the guidance of an expert to help instill confidence and build firm foundations from the start.

This seven-night beginner’s workshop with tutor, model milliner Dillon Wallwork (www.dillonwallwork.co.uk) will introduce you to the technical skills for blocking and shaping hats as well as teaching a range of millinery stitches and decorative techniques.  Your design abilities evolve and your own style emerges as you learn how to design and fit a hat correctly.

“I had a really wonderful time.
The food was incredible, the teacher patient and inspiring and the hosts perfect.” Hilary B, UK

During the five days of full-time tuition you’ll become familiar with the techniques for making hats in felt, sinamay and straw. Daily demonstrations focus on individual techniques and one-to-one support is available from Dillon or his full-time assistant.

Students on this workshop immerse themselves completely in the world of hats when we visit the international hat festival, Estivales du Chapeau, which takes place locally from 12-16 July.  As well as meeting milliners from all over the world, you’ll have the chance to see the entries for the hat competition and visit at least one of nearby hat factories.

This workshop is the perfect introduction to millinery and Dillon’s love of teaching makes this beginner’s both fun and instructive. You’ll find yourself both competent and confident with basic blocking, brim-wiring and trimming by the end of the week.

MILLINERY TRIMMINGS: with Dillon Wallwork and Bridget Bailey
29 SEPTEMBER - 6 OCTOBER 2012

On this course you will gain a full understanding of the design and production of millinery trimmings and learn the value of creating a focal point. The week is led by two experienced milliners Dillon Wallwork (www.dillonwallwork.co.uk) and Bridget Bailey (www.baileytomlin.com).

The course is in two parts. Dillon will cover traditional trimmings such as flower-making, bows and feathers, while Bridget introduces students to a fresh approach to working with millinery materials.

Bridget works with fine woven straw and silk which she colours and shapes to create beautiful embellishments for headpieces, combs and hats. Through demonstrations and individual support you will learn how to colour, hand-roll, stiffen and wire sinamay and silk and create your own unique pieces.

“Thanks for a wonderful stay – food, service, location and most importantly millinery
and new friends – fantastic! Lucy S, Carmarthen, Wales, UK

In Dillon’s classes you will learn about the art of flower-making and how to manipulate fabrics to create hat decorations inspired by nature.  There will also be step-by-step lessons in another millinery staple: bows and knots and a final session on shaping and curling feathers.

This is a stand-alone course aimed at any level of millinery experience. It is helpful, but not essential, if you have taken the Millinery Draping and Moulding course in the previous week.

FRENCH COUNTRY COOKERY & CRAFTS: with Charlotte Clement and Anna Corba
6-13 OCTOBER 2012

Paris-trained chef, Charlotte Clement, is the inspiration behind a week of French country cooking which also features creative crafting classes with US paper artist Anna Corba (http://annacorbastudio.com).

Charlotte cooks and teaches at Chateau Dumas where she has established a reputation for the quality and inventiveness of her cuisine. Her passion for food brings her cooking demonstrations alive and her classes are peppered with gorgeous recipes, practical tips and anecdotes gained through years of living and working in rural France.

Cooking with the seasons is a way of life in France and fresh, ripe, seasonal ingredients are at the core of Charlotte’s warm-hearted cooking.  The autumn markets in the Quercy excite with their abundance of colour and amazing array of local produce. Visits to traditional markets are planned during the week where you’ll have the chance to meet local farmers, enjoy impromptu tastings and select the freshest and finest ingredients for your cooking projects.

During hands-on cooking sessions at the Chateau, Charlotte will show you how to make some classic French autumn preparations: Pates, Terrines and Stuffings for freezing or preserving; Chocolates, Biscuits and Sweets for treats and gifts; Herbs, Spices and Pickles to invigorate oils, vinegars, butters, mustards and teas and Aperitifs and Snack ideas for pre-dinner drinks and parties.

“This has been one of my best holidays ever. Merci for all your thoughtful attention. I would highly recommend Chateau Dumas – in fact I’ll be shouting it from the rooftops” Sue T, USA

Anna Corba’s studio-based crafting projects complement the cooking sessions perfectly and build on the culinary theme. Using Anna’s trademark wax technique you’ll make a delightful personalised hand-bound book to hold your recipes. Another of Anna’s classes is themed to table décor and will show you how to create beautiful place names and menus using vintage papers and other notions. During another innovative class you’ll make a delightful pastry base or cake stand.

You’ll have such a surplus of treasures from the week that there’ll be plenty to give away to friends and family over the holiday and festive season. Included in the workshop are little jars and presentation boxes for your goodies and everyone will get a full set of recipes to include in your hand-bound book.

BONNE FETE: FESTIVE HOLIDAY CREATIONS
with Anna Corba, Charlotte Clement and Lizzie Hulme

13-20 OCTOBER 2012

In this week of exciting creativity you’ll make a variety of gorgeous handmade presents to keep or give away to family and friends.  Crafting classes planned include paper-based projects with US artist Anna Corba, textile and other projects with Lizzie Hulme and festive-themed cooking sessions with chef Charlotte Clement.

Drawing on Anna’s expertise with paper crafting you’ll be inspired during this innovative workshop to make a variety of unique and desirable items. Using a stock of new and vintage materials such as postage stamps, music scores, handwritten manuscripts and printing blocks and inks, you’ll create beautifully embellished items such as a collaged keepsake box, tags and a waxed notebook or journal.

With Lizzie’s classes you’ll have the chance to delve into an extensive collection of antique French textiles, ribbons and other notions picked up over the years at country fleamarkets in the area. You’ll create truly original bags, doorstops, pincushions and other easy-to-pack treasures,  work with rare 19th century handmade glass beaded flowers and explore the decorative and jewellery potential of pieces of broken porcelain.

“It has been so wonderful to come back to beautiful Chateau Dumas. This course has been so productive and inspirational” Helen & Sandra B, Dorset, UK

During hands-on demonstrations with Charlotte you’ll make delicious French festive sweet and savoury treats which you can package up in pretty boxes and gingham-topped jars to offer as gifts (or perhaps as snacks for the journey home!). Also planned is a visit to a traditional food market in the medieval town of St Antonin-Noble-Val which will be at its autumnal best and full of colour and atmosphere.

A mid-week morning visit to the nearby town of Cahors, famous for its wine and medieval Pont Valentré bridge, gives you the opportunity to shop at the market and local brocantes.  There still room for spontaneity though and if we find out when the schedules are published that there is a local fleamarket then we’ll definitely include a visit in the week’s itinerary.
