Enquire About AvailabilityExperiments with the Etching Press

Saturday 2-9 September 2017with Jo de Pear

About the Workshop

“Come up and see my etchings” is the phrase you’ll find any excuse to use at the end of our etching workshop with printmaker Jo de Pear.  On this inspirational week you’ll learn to work with an etching press to produce beautiful one-off images on paper and fabric.

An etching press offers limitless possibilities for creative expression and if this is your first time printing with a press you’ll find the process exciting.  Even simple mono-prints can be intricate and detailed and the week will begin with print experiments using embroidered and stitched textiles printed on rag paper

Collagraphs are a quick way to understand surface texture and you’ll work on building up a print-ready collage using found objects. You’ll explore the possibilities for mark-making and create a unique set of blind embossed prints from your image before inking up the press and trying out different effects using a selection of coloured inks.

The following day Jo will show you how to make the most exquisite and delicate of prints using drypoint etching (acid-free).  Working into soft aluminium plates with etching tools, you’ll work from old family photographs and landscape shots to produce drawn plates for printing onto handmade paper.  You’ll learn chine-collé techniques and end the day with a finished piece ready for mounting.

On Thursday we take a break from the etching press and turn to screenprinting on fabric. Using hand cut paper stencil designs and expressive brush marks you’ll create painterly images perfect for making mono prints on T-shirts and tea towels in vibrant textile inks – the perfect gift for loved ones back home.  On the final day you’ll have the chance to explore and experiment with your favourite technique of the week in more depth.

This week will be the perfect introduction to printmaking and for anyone new to the etching press it will be an eye-opening and creatively stimulating experience. During the week we will also visit the Sunday morning farmer’s market in medieval St Antonin as well as a local fleamarket where we’ll look for textiles and other interesting objects for our printing projects.
