Enquire About AvailabilityStitches that Speak Volumes: Writing with a Needle

Saturday 29 July - 5 August 2017with Rosalind Wyatt

About the Workshop

“I love the versatility of letters and the fact that within a single mark can be a thousand emotions” says textile artist Rosalind Wyatt describing her art. Rosalind’s work is all about words and exploring writing using a needle and thread as she takes something handwritten, perhaps a letter, a story or a recipe, and copies it in stitch. During this workshop Rosalind will teach you how to write with a needle and you’ll work on creating a hand-stitched piece personal to you incorporating fabric collage and calligraphic text.

Rosalind trained initially in western Calligraphy then continued her studies in Japan with a Zen master and before you pick up your needle you’ll experiment with nib and brush to open yourself up to a better understanding of mark-making.  You’ll look at the formation of letters in handwritten historical papers and appreciate how the choice of writing tool influences the mark that’s made.

The aim of the next exercise is to help you to recreate the spontaneity and rhythm of handwriting and Rosalind will be your guide as you ‘take a line for a walk’ and learn to feel free with a needle.   Working with a template you’ll practice stitching over lettering as you learn to form a letter in stitch. You’ll work with a range of yarns and threads to replicate marks and break down stitch into stitched marks that form letters ‘curving a line’.

You’ll be encouraged to bring your own handwritten piece with you to the week - it might be a love letter, a message or family anecdote - or you can choose to work from the flowing handwritten text found in one of the 17th and 18th century manuscripts at the Chateau.   Whichever text you choose you’ll find yourself connecting with it as you step into the thoughts and musings of the letter writer.

Each workshop participant will be given a 19th century French nightdress on which to stitch their chosen handwritten text.   Made of handwoven linen or hemp with cotton sleeves, these beautiful hand sewn nightdresses were locally made.  Many have monograms and you can use this as an inspiration for your work.

Included in the week is a visit to the medieval town of St Antonin-Noble-Val for the Sunday morning market and we’ll also visit a local fleamarket.

Rosalind Wyatt

Rosalind Wyatt’s work is about words – the sound and feel of them and the forming of letters.  Her range of writing tools has expanded from nib, through to brush and now to a needle.  Her recent work explores ‘writing with a needle’, this is done directly by hand and eye onto textile without pre-printing.  She believes that handwriting reveals the personality of the letter writer and she is fascinated by the unique details of a handwritten mark.

Rosalind was the creative director of an art textile installation incorporating historical garments and artefacts telling the story of London in Stitch.  A modern-day Bayeux tapestry, Londoner’s hats, gloves, garments and shoes become the historical “canvas” for the epic story of London.
