Enquire About AvailabilityBursting with Colour

Saturday 22-29 July 2017with Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably

About the Workshop

Kaffe Fassett, one of the most celebrated textile artist of our time, and Brandon Mably, his studio design partner, invite you to share their unique design vision during a workshop that promises to invigorate your creative work and change the way you look at colour forever.

Whether you’re a knitter, stitcher, patchworker or painter, you’ll develop a new and intimate relationship with colour during this workshop and build a personal palette of hues that will help to bring out the authenticity and originality in your work.

You’ll learn from Kaffe and Brandon how to pick up inspiration from the world around you and how to incorporate new influences into your design work. On trips to the local food markets or simple walks in the garden, you’ll learn to sharpen your powers of observation and develop your mind’s eye under the guidance of Kaffe and Brandon.   The light in the south of France is brilliant and seductive. It transforms the colours, textures and shapes that surround us and influences how we see the world.

You’ll spend time in the studio sketching and working on exercises with paper and gouache and creating unique collages. Working on a design wall and using a rich colour palette of fabric scraps, large and small-scale prints, solids and stripes, you’ll learn about depth and dimension,  contrast and colour combinations.

You'll also enjoy a day of dyeing with woad, the plant used throughout Europe in medieval times to dye the colour blue, and we’ll round off the week with a day of knitting with Brandon.  It will be his mission to help you to uncover your design sensibility and sense of colour through knitting (knowledge of basic stocking stitch is required, ie, knit and purl).  Working with a range of light and dark colours in contrasting tones you’ll gain the confidence to create your own personal colour scheme.

During the week you’ll also visit the atmospheric food and farmer’s market in the medieval town of St Antonin-Noble-Val as well as a local fleamarket. You’ll leave at the end of the week with a new-found understanding of the meaning of colour and a sense of how to harness its power in your creative work.
