Enquire About AvailabilitySpecialist Techniques with Parasisal Straw

Saturday 8-15 July 2017with Bridget Bailey

About the Workshop

Bridget Bailey www.baileytomlin.com returns to Chateau Dumas again in 2017 to lead a workshop teaching specialist skills for working with parasisal straw.

Parasisal is a high quality, smooth weave straw that can be dyed, blocked and stiffened to achieve sculptural effects. The preferred straw for haute couture millinery, an ability to work confidently with parasisal is a must not only for aspiring milliners but textile artists are using this material increasingly in their projects

Bridget is a natural teacher and she brings a raft of specialist techniques to this class.   One of her fortés is dyeing and colour matching and during the week she’ll show you how to colour grade straw with precision and confidence – an essential skill if matching, toning or contrasting is part of your creative work.

Bridget has a reputation for making pieces that are imaginative and innovative executed with precision and detail and she shares this knowledge generously.  She’s known for her immaculate rolling techniques and perfect points that don’t fray and you’ll learn to master these and other techniques such as how to cover a couture headband with parasisal.

You’ll practice and perfect the techniques under Bridget’s guidance and make a series of small nature-inspired forms from petals and pea pods to lilies and leaves which you’ll attach to a covered headband using the skills you’ve learned.   By the end of the week you’ll have completed two stunning headpieces and developed a completely new understanding of the possibilities for working with this versatile material.

This workshop is suitable for all levels from total beginner to advanced with no prior experience of blocking required.

The week coincides with the international Hat Festival, Estivales du Chapeau, which attracts milliners from all over the world.  We’ll pay a visit to the Festival as well as a local farmer’s market in the medieval village of St Antonin-Noble-Val.
