Enquire About AvailabilityBag of Tricks: Contemporary Leatherwork

Saturday 24-31 August 2019with Carla and Jeremy Bonner and Selvedge Magazine

About the Workshop

On this wonderful workshop with Carla and Jeremy Bonner of Bonner Leather Studio and Selvedge Magazine you’ll  make two purses and a gorgeous hand-stitched shoulder bag from vegetable tanned English bridal leather.

The workshop begins with a gentle introduction to the hand tools and essential techniques of pattern making, hole punching and hand-stitching. For your first project you’ll make a simple triangular coin purse to get the feel of working with leather, one of the most tactile of materials.  Next you’ll work on a three piece purse learning more complex skills such as stretching and moulding leather using a special wet technique.

As your confidence builds, and with Carla and Jeremy by your side at all times, you’ll get the essential leatherwork skills under your belt during the week.  You’ll learn all about rivets and press studs, how to make and attach straps – adjustable and fixed – and how to fit buckles and other fixings.  You’ll even learn how to make a rolled handle.

All these newly mastered skills will be essential for your final project: a medium sized shoulder Day Bag in your choice of vegetable tanned English bridal leather.

We take a break mid-week to enjoy a day of dyeing with woad, the original blue dye from the woad plant grown in the Toulouse area since medieval times. You can bring things to dye from home, pick items up at local markets or buy natural fabric from Chateau Dumas.

During the week there will also be a visit to the nearby atmospheric Sunday morning food and craft market in St Antonin-Noble-Val, the medieval town where the films Charlotte Gray and The Hundred Foot Journey were filmed.
