About the Workshop

Natural dye specialist Nicola Cliffe of Madder Cutch & Co is known for her gorgeous sustainable furnishing fabrics which she designs and prints on linen.  Her designs often reflect natural themes and she uses dyes made from plant extracts and pigments, employing the latest, most environmentally friendly methods to show colours at their beautiful best.

On this workshop Nicola with take you through her process from design through to finished screen printed fabric using natural dyes as your colour palette.  You’ll begin the week by experimenting with the screen-printing process and making a variety of samples, referencing the work of remarkable print designers past and present. Next you’ll learn how to transform your ideas into a design, develop motifs and repeat patterns before learning to cut a stencil.

Nicola will talk about the history and use of natural dyes before demonstrating how to mix dye pastes.  Once you’ve developed your own palette of hues, you’ll take your screen and begin printing on your choice of natural fabric.  You’ll become more confident with practice and begin to work on more complex patterns, learning from Nicola about colour separation and techniques for creating multi-coloured prints.

We take a break mid- week to enjoy a day of dyeing with woad, the original blue dye from the woad plant grown in the Toulouse area since medieval times. You can bring things to dye from home, pick items up at local markets or buy natural fabric from Chateau Dumas.

During the week there will also be a visit to the nearby atmospheric Sunday morning food and craft market in St Antonin-Noble-Val, the medieval town where the films Charlotte Gray and The Hundred Foot Journey were filmed.

Nicola Cliffe

A chemistry teacher with a lifelong love of textiles Nicola left the classroom to follow a childhood dream of going to art college. Triggered by a strong desire to redress the careless use of synthetic dyes worldwide, she completed an MA with distinction in sustainable textile design at Chelsea College of Art and Design.

Inspiration from her surroundings and a love to draw, Nicola turns her sketches into flowing repeats and screen-prints them by hand in her garden studio. The delicate flowers of Achillea millefolium that grow in the garden every summer have led to her first collection.
