About the Workshop

Spend a week at Chateau Dumas with Cressida Bell, accomplished artist and designer and descendant of the Bloomsbury Group. During the week you’ll decorate a pair of conical lampshades and a small wooden tray and gain an insight into Cressida’s unique approach to decoration and pattern-making.

There is no doubt that Cressida has inherited the family creative gene; her father was author Quentin Bell and her grandmother was Vanessa Bell, sister of Virginia Woolf. Although there is some influence from her famous Bloomsbury Group forebears, she has forged her own very distinctive style over the last 35 years as a designer.

Cressida’s work is uncompromisingly decorative: her patterns are striking and she uses colour with relish and confidence. On this workshop you’ll decorate a pair of 10” lampshades and a small wooden tray, using source material derived either from Cressida’s designs, Bloomsbury art, or any other source of inspiration.

Starting with a series of sketches and drawings, you’ll work on ideas for your designs. You can bring sources of inspiration with you such as postcards, pictures or favourite fabrics, or you can pick through our library of books and resource materials.  Once you have your finished design Cressida will show you how to transfer the design using tracings and templates. After a discussion about the theory of colour practice, you’ll be shown how to mix pigments to create your own palette. You will use a range of dyes and paints to decorate your lampshades and tray from specialist translucent dyes, opaque emulsion and specialist gold powder paint.

The course will take you from your initial ideas, through ways of transferring them and constructing a working drawing, to techniques of paint application and finally the production of your finished work of art.

During the week there will also be a visit to the nearby atmospheric Sunday morning food and craft market in St Antonin-Noble-Val, the medieval town where the films Charlotte Gray and The Hundred Foot Journey were filmed.
