About the Workshop

We’re delighted to offer a mosaic workshop with the multi-talented Candace Bahouth, an artist whose work over the years has spanned woven tapestry and fine needlepoint as well as the most extraordinary mosaics.

From a baseball style sneaker decorated with shards of precision cut mirror glass to soaring totems clad in fragments of china tea sets (complete with embedded spouts and handles), Candace’s work is full of wit, style and exuberance. She is a true original with an unerring eye for design and the skill of a true craftsman. You’ll learn about more than just process as Candace is an artist whose creative work has natural flow.

Starting with a palette of assorted china your mission for the week is to create a mosaic frame, learning from Candace at each stage of the process from cutting and placing through to grouting. Using coloured tesserae and pieces of broken vintage china you’ll build a beautiful mosaic and learn to incorporate other elements such as jewellery and plastics.

You’ll be encouraged to bring some of your own objects with you to the workshop – plates from an old family set for example, costume jewellery or even shells – to add more personal meaning to your work. We’ll also have a cache of old china you can dip into during the week and you can look for more treasures for your project when we visit a local fleamarket.

During the week there will also be a visit to the nearby atmospheric Sunday morning food and craft market in St Antonin-Noble-Val, the medieval town where the films Charlotte Gray and The Hundred Foot Journey were filmed.

Candace Bahouth

Candace Bahouth's work is like her: exuberant, freely connecting, bright on sight, deep on examination, emotional and alive. She studied art at Syracuse Univesity in the US and won a graduate award for weaving.  She now lives and works in Britain where she developed her painterly, sculptural weaving style before discovering needlepoint and designing patterns - she has had more than 130 published.

Between weaving and needlepoint, Candace discovered a love of mosaics.  She uses shells, shale and found material from nature as well as fragments of china. In the summer of 1996, a highly praised retrospective exhibition was mounted by the American Museum in Bath, the best attended single artist show in the museum's history.  In 2008 she held a joint exhibition with Kaffe Fassett at the Victoria Gallery in Bath and in 2018 Fassett & Bahouth were invited back for another sell out show. Two of her tapestries are on permanent display in London's V&A.

Heartfelt thanks for a week I'll never forget. The facilities, the views, the outings, the cool workshop space, the crystal clear pool.....but especially the food. It was life-changing. Rhonda F, USA
