About the Workshop

We’re putting the art and craft of letter writing centre stage for this wonderful multi-disciplinary workshop with printmakers and pattern smiths Jonathan Mercer and Kate Fishenden of Starch Green.

Your mission on this week is to create an elegant social stationery box complete with personalised hand-printed stationery and envelopes.  You’ll cover a range of skills from design and box-making, wood engraving and proofing, compositing and letterpress printing - all the elements required for your bespoke stationery box.

Everything about Starch Green is distinctive – from their love of twentieth century art and design to the unmistakable lines of their wood engravings. After a relaxed hands-on session when you’ll learn from expert Jonathan how to engrave on boxwood, you’ll be free to experiment with the engraving tools exploring textures and marks. You’ll record and refine your ideas in a sketchbook before moving onto a final engraving which will be used to print on your handwriting paper and envelopes.

To make your personalised stationery you'll set your name using cold metal type in pretty much the same say as Gutenberg and Caxton did in the 15th century. You'll then be guided in using the Adana printing presses to print your type and your wood engraving together on either writing paper or correspondence cards.

Next you’ll make your stationery box using traditional bookbinding skills and materials. A range of repeat pattern papers, marble paper and other materials to cover the box will be available for you to personalise your keepsake. Finishing touches may include calligraphic dedication plates, ribbon closures and hand-made sketch books.

You'll be fully immersed in your craft during this week, but you’ll still find there’ll be plenty of opportunity for fun, laughter and creative insight.

During the week there will also be a visit to the nearby atmospheric Sunday morning food and craft market in St Antonin-Noble-Val, the medieval town where the films Charlotte Gray and The Hundred Foot Journey were filmed.

Starch Green

Artist-designers Jonathan Mercer and Kate Fishenden, aka Starch Green, use craft skills to create design, artwork and objects that add positively to the pattern of life, balancing home and work and creating a feeling of well-being. Their talents dovetail, both having skills in illustration, design and typography. Jonathan’s wood engravings are the source and inspiration for repeat patterns, prints and stationery. Working collaboratively on design work, Kate also brings in the art of silkscreen printing to create fine art prints and extend the work on to textiles.

The whole experience - all the way down to the soap - was so lovely, dare I say, even with a touch of magic! Cathie T, USA
