About the Workshop

Join us for a week of oil painting, indulging in both plein air painting and studio still life work with California artist Samantha Buller.

Begin with a Sunday morning visit to an atmospheric farmer’s market in the medieval town of St Antonin, with the first workshop session taking place after lunch. We will discuss basic color mixing, and oil painting techniques/terms which will help you throughout the course of the week.

In the Chateau’s studio get started! We will paint small, still life studies, 20,30,40 minutes.... This is a great exercise to get everyone warmed up and sharpen our ability to move throughout a painting. Make quick, smart decisions! An end-of-the-day critique will follow while enjoying some French wines and small bites to help unwind. Next, spend a day plein air painting right on the stunning property.  This gives us time to explore the grounds, and have a nice relaxing day close to home. Paint at your own pace while Samantha comes around to each student for individualized help.

Take a day excursion being driven into town to focus on painting buildings, windows, bicycles, whatever your heart desires.  A demonstration to begin the day will help you get started. Samantha focuses on simplifying the subject matter and trying to understand value relationships. Working with color is the fun part.  She stresses finding your own style within a similar approach. Exaggerate color, simplify form, create a moody palette- it’s up to you.

Later in the week we will revisit still life with longer poses, utilizing both the studio and the beautiful outdoors. Think fruits, cheeses, and wines out in the crisp sun....try not to eat the set up!

Finish the week with a final critique, look at the progress you have made from just four or five days earlier. Discuss what your strengths are and which areas can be developed further. Look at what was created as a whole, giving you encouragement and motivation to keep painting. Enjoy a good bye dinner with your new artist friends.

Beginners welcome, although some experience with oil paint is helpful.

The week includes 7 nights' acommodation, all meals (except one which is taken in a restaurant at guests' cost), wine with dinner,  full-time tuition and oils paints and trips out to a local town, as well the farmer's market in medieval St Antonin-Noble-Val.   Flights to Toulouse and transfers to the Chateau not included.  Transfers from Toulouse airprot are available at 40E per person per journey and transfers from Montauban train station are available at 25E per person per journey.

Samantha Buller

Samantha Buller lives and works in Sonoma County, California. She received her BFA in Painting from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco and was named by Southwest Art magazine as one of 2013’s young artists to watch.

In 2008 she studied in Italy and in 2014 she spent time learning from prominent artist, Scott Christensen.    Her work has been shown in the Hall of Justice in San Francisco, in business’, hospitals, and several galleries, as well as on prime time television.

Overall, Samantha’s love of color completely drives her work. She is inspired by the art of Wayne Thiebaud for his paint application, color, and composition, as well as the works of Raimonds Staprans for his layering techniques. She chooses to paint simplistic objects to create a clean, strong design, sharing interest with the negative space.

The most wonderful week in an extraordinary place with the most astonishing and inspirational food. I haven't been this happy in a long time. Alison J-B, UK
