Enquire About AvailabilityWillow Basket-making

Saturday 16-23 June 2018with Annemarie O'Sullivan and Selvedge magazine

About the Workshop

Weaving a basket from willow is the most satisfying of crafts.  It connects you to an ancient tradition that has its own pace and rhythm and yet it feels totally contemporary at the same time.  On this workshop with basket-maker Annemarie O’Sullivan you’ll hand weave a beautiful frame basket from willow and learn about the process of planting, harvesting and preparing willow by hand.

Frame baskets make sturdy containers, quite architectural in design. They’re made by tying two hoops together to which vertical ribs are then attached with the gaps filled in by weaving with willow. The weaving builds slowly and steadily and there is space to relax as the basket grows.

Annemarie’s woven baskets are a response to the materials she gathers on the land and her work encompasses natural beauty and practicality. During the week you’ll work with Black Maul, Harrisons, Brittany Green and Dicky Meadows willow and learn the fundamentals of frame basketry and complete one, or possibly two, beautiful baskets.

You’ll begin by tying the hoops which will be prepared and dried in advance of the workshop to prevent the shape distorting during construction.  After you have completed your first frame basket you will have the option to make some additional hoops to take away with you or to try a smaller weaving project.

We take a break from weaving at the end of the week to enjoy a day of dyeing with woad, the original blue dye from the woad plant grown in the Toulouse area since medieval times. You can bring things to dye from home, pick items up at local markets or buy natural fabric from Chateau Dumas.

During the week there will also be a visit to the nearby atmospheric Sunday morning food and craft market in St Antonin-Noble-Val, the medieval town where the films Charlotte Gray and The Hundred Foot Journey were filmed.

This course is suitable for those who are completely new to willow basket making, or those who have taken a few classes but would like to improve their skills.

Annemarie O'Sullivan

Annemarie O’Sullivan is a basket maker based in Sussex. Her baskets and woven objects are a response to the materials she hand gathers from the land. She grows around twenty different types of willow and often combines these with coppiced wood.

Her work draws on the sturdiness of agricultural baskets, the curves of the landscape and a deep respect for ancient crafts. She is inspired by simple connections with basket makers from the past.

The weaving and binding techniques Annemarie uses have been used for hundreds of years to create small-scale domestic objects through to larger-scale woven forms. This connection with nature draws her to site specific, beautifully crafted works, which are steeped in history and landscape.
