Enquire About AvailabilityPainting with Threads

Saturday 16-23 June 2018with Lynne Curran and Selvedge magazine

About the Workshop

‘Painting in miniature with threads’ is how tapestry artist Lynne Curran describes her work.  Taking inspiration from medieval tapestries she enjoys using motifs as symbols in her work and portraying whimsical scenes from every life such as people dancing, singing and gardening.

On this workshop you’ll learn from Lynne how to use traditional tapestry techniques as a springboard to achieving some unusual and expressive effects using threads and weaving patterns.   You’ll explore the different results that can be achieved using a curved weft or by thread-mixing, hatching and adopting an undulating, uneven weft thread.

Tapestry is a contemplative pursuit which is founded on a clear set of rules and you’ll begin the workshop with a thorough grounding in technique. You’ll work on a sample, learning how to shade, add texture and relief and how to control outlines and ‘floating wefts’. Each student will sketch a design or ‘cartoon’ to weave by hand with a wooden bobbin and simple vertical frame using linen, silk, cotton and fine wool.

You’ll begin by working on a sample, learning how to shade, add texture and relief and how to control outlines and ‘floating wefts’.  You’ll be encouraged to play and experiment with different yarns in order to encourage the development of your own weaving style or ‘handwriting’. Lynne will guide you throughout sharing her knowledge and expertise with you generously.

We take a break from weaving at the end of the week to enjoy a day of dyeing with woad, the original blue dye from the woad plant grown in the Toulouse area since medieval times. You can bring things to dye from home, pick items up at local markets or buy natural fabric from Chateau Dumas.

During the week there will also be a visit to the nearby atmospheric Sunday morning food and craft market in St Antonin-Noble-Val, the medieval town where the films Charlotte Gray and The Hundred Foot Journey were filmed.

Places are limited and this allows for total beginners to work alongside those with experience.

Lynne Curran

Lynne Curran studied in Edinburgh in the 70’s and where she first developed her distinctive figurative style of ‘painting in miniature with threads’. Her imagery is sifted through sketchbooks which are part-scrapbook and part-diary, reflecting everyday subjects, With echoes of Coptic and Medieval tapestries, she has remained faithful to her unique vision and that passion has been appreciated by collectors all over the world, including Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art, The V&A and more recently, The Uffizi Gallery’s self-portrait collection in the Vasari corridor.  Since 2006 she has lived in Italy.
