About the Workshop

Textile designer Sarah Campbell is a truly unique talent whose work over the past 50 years includes several iconic textile designs. Along with her sister, Susan Collier, she co-founded Collier Campbell and they worked together until Susan’s death in 2011.  Since then Sarah has established a successful new chapter in her creative story.

We’re thrilled to be working with Sarah on a Pattern in Textile workshop at Chateau Dumas in 2018. Verve, love of pattern and colour plus an inventive freshness are the hallmarks of her work and she will encourage you to explore, experience and understand the process of making pattern on textiles. By the end of the week you’ll have developed a deeper understanding of pattern making and take away a body of painted fabric samples and a visual diary of your journey of discoveries.

We begin with simple mark-making on paper, a process designed to loosen up your practice and help your creativity to flow before moving onto more purposeful, guided pattern design using paint.  The Chateau gardens and surroundings offer plenty of design inspiration or you can work from a still-life or choose a personal reference.

These early mark-making exercises build confidence and prepare you for painting on cloth as you explore different themes and experiment with pattern. You’ll work directly onto calico, linen and cotton cloth with both paint brushes and foam pads using paints and inks that are iron-fixed to make them wash and light-fast.  With Sarah as your guide you’ll learn about placement, colour and scale and creating patterns that extend from selvedge to selvedge.

Mid-week we take a break to enjoy a day of dyeing with woad, the blue dye derived from the leaves of the woad plant which has grown in the Toulouse area since medieval times.

Towards the end of the workshop there is enough flexibility in the programme to allow you to embroider into your painted cloth, sew a top or skirt or continue pattern making with paint and ink.  Whatever project you choose Sarah will share her expertise and experience with originality and joy.

During the week we will also visit the Sunday morning market in atmospheric St Antonin-Noble-Val as well as a local fleamarket.
