Enquire About AvailabilityModern Handmade Dolls and Quilts SOLD OUT

Saturday 1-8 September 2018 with Jess Brown and the Makerie

About the Workshop

Join us for a wonderful week of fun and creativity with Californian textile artist Jess Brown in association with The Makerie from 1 to 8 September 2018.

Jess Brown’s handmade dolls, quilts and women’s clothing line have won her fans all over the world and during this workshop you'll learn to embrace Jess' free and deconstructed approach to design and apply similar techniques to your own projects. You’ll work closely with Jess and her studio assistant Kim during the workshop hand stitching a modern day rag doll and a throw-sized quilt.

You’ll learn to build on your own creative style as you design, construct and accessorize your rag doll, learning about free expression and celebrating happy accidents as you go.  You’ll hand stitch a throw-size quilt top using raw linen, assorted fabric scraps and snippets from your woad dye pieces finishing it with a quilt back.

On one day you’ll enjoy a fun day in the woods with expert Denise Lambert dyeing natural fabrics with woad, the vibrant blue dye grown throughout the Toulouse area during medieval times.  Mid-week we’ll visit the lovely town of Cahors, famous for its ‘black’ wine, to experience the weekly farmer’s market and charming courtyard gardens.  There’ll be time for a spot of shopping before a visit to the magnificent Pont Valentré bridge built in 1308.

There’ll also be other markets to enjoy from the lively Sunday marché in atmospheric St Antonin-Noble-Val to a local fleamarket. The week is rounded off with a visit to the monthly antique and fleamarket in Toulouse where you’ll get the chance to pick up something vintage to remind you of your stay in our beautiful corner of southwest France.

You do not need to be an experienced sewer to join this workshop although basic sewing skills are required.

Jess Brown

Jess first began making dolls for her children using cashmere sweaters and antique remnants and has developed a line of signature handmade ragdolls based on her original doll design,  each doll cut to order in her Northern California studio using the finest materials.

She launched Jess Brown Pieces in 2012, a collection of carefully edited timeless pieces inspired by vintage flea market finds. Each piece has been redesigned with a modern aesthetic using carefully hand picked natural fibers. The collection includes select pieces for home — hand quilted pillow shams and linen throw size quilts with the same level of detail and timeless sophistication.

The Makerie

At the Makerie, we believe everyone has a creative soul and when we take time to make something with our hands, we connect with ourselves and others in the most meaningful ways. To celebrate and share our passion, we host modern creative retreats to nurture the creative spirit. We seek beautiful, special locations and renowned artisans and teachers who love to share their talents and gifts. Makers of all levels are invited to join us for several hours or days of joyful exploration and connection. While each retreat has its own unique personality, they all share an emphasis on play, creativity and self-care. We honor imperfection, slowing down, noticing life’s smallest, most meaningful treasures, and enjoying the present moment.

What a magical corner of France - the people, the place, the shared love of textiles and beautiful things. I leave inspired, refreshed, energised and profoundly nourished. Fiona W, Senegal
