Enquire About AvailabilityImprovisational Patchwork and Quilt-Making

Saturday 18-25 August 2018with Abigail Booth and Selvedge magazine

About the Workshop

Join us for a week of quilt making with textile artist Abigail Booth of Forest and Found and Selvedge magazine and learn how to piece and handstitch an abstract quilt from a selection of new and vintage fabric scraps.

Abigail's improvisational and experimental approach to quilt-making is the perfect way to introduce beginners to the craft as well as challenging those with previous experience.  You'll be encouraged to think about colour and composition in a free and playful way with Abigail to guide you through the process from start to finish and instil you with the confidence to be adventurous and bold with your choices.

Both traditional and contemporary approaches to patchwork will be explored in order to enrich the design of everyone’s unique and individual work. You’ll learn how to layer and mark up your piece ready for quilting and use a combination of machine and hand sewing to make your quilt top.  You'll bind and finish the edges to complete your project.

There’ll be a taster session in natural dyes one afternoon when participants will get the chance to hand dye sections of fabric to incorporate into their work. We'll set up several vats containing a variety of colours made from traditional dye plants.

We will take a break from the course mid-week to enjoy a day of dyeing with the original blue dye from the woad plant, grown in the Toulouse area since medieval times. You can bring things to dye from home, pick items up at local markets or buy natural fabric from Chateau Dumas. During the week there is also a visit to the nearby atmospheric Sunday morning food and craft market in St Antonin-Noble-Val, the medieval town where the films Charlotte Gray and The Hundred Foot Journey were filmed.

Beginners to quilt-making are most welcome to join this week.
