Saturday 4-11 August 2018 with Karen Nicol and Selvedge Magazine

About the Workshop

Your imagination will blossom on this embroidered flower workshop with mixed media textile artist Karen Nicol and Selvedge magazine.

The natural beauty of flowers, with all their incredible variety and joyous colour, will be the source of inspiration during a week in which you will enjoy leaving your preconceptions of embroidery behind and embracing new ways to interprete embroidery and learn novel techniques for fabric manipulation.

With 40 years of experience as a teacher and embroiderer no one is better placed than Karen to help you develop your own personal style and introduce you to fresh ways of working both two and three dimensionally. The week begins by looking at flowers in nature and the different ways that artists interpret flowers in paintings and drawings.

Karen will show you how to translate your floral designs onto pieces of 19th century French linen using hand stitching techniques and for those who feel comfortable using a sewing machine,  there’ll be a chance to experiment with the free needle sewing technique.

Drawing on our large stock of threads, trimmings and fabric scraps, you'll be able to choose from chiffon and raffia to create painterly effects or silks, taffetas and felts to cut shapes for roses, hydrangeas or peonies.  You'll also be able to experiment with smocking and pleating effects with the The Princess pleater.

We take a break mid-week to enjoy a day of dyeing with woad, the blue dye derived from the leaves of the woad plant which has grown in the Toulouse area since medieval times.  We will also visit the nearby farmer’s market in St Antonin Noble Val, the medieval town where the films Charlotte Gray and The Hundred Foot Journey were filmed.

At the end of this workshop you will have a new set of skills under your belt and a fresh understanding of the language of embroidered flowers that you can take forward into many different projects from clothes and accessories to soft furnishings and art.

A familiary with handstitching would be helpful on this workshop.  An ability to draw isn’t necessary as an untrained eye has a freshness of viewpoint which can be exciting.
