Saturday 14-21 July 2018with Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably

About the Workshop

Kaffe Fassett, one of the most celebrated textile artist of our time, and Brandon Mably, his studio design partner, invite you to share their unique design vision during a workshop in which you’ll indulge in the sensuality of colour in paint.

Beginners to painting are welcome and need not feel in any way intimidated as this is not a workshop on how to paint, but rather a week in which you'll reach a deeper understanding of colour and composition. You’ll spend time in the studio and gardens sketching and working on exercises with paper and gouache learning to sharpen your powers of observation and develop your mind’s eye under the guidance of Kaffe and Brandon.

The week begins with a visit to the Sunday morning farmer’s market in the medieval town of St Antonin-Noble-Val where we’ll gather the elements necessary to create a sumptuous arrangement for a still life class.  The light in the south of France is brilliant and seductive, transforming the colours, textures and shapes that surround us and influence how we see the world. After an introduction to the week and slide show we’ll begin the still life drawing and painting class.

Mid-week we will have a very special day of dyeing natural fabrics in the garden with woad expert Denise Lambert followed by a walk through the Chateau grounds and along quiet country roads.

We return to the studio again for another colour exercise, this time applying colour to a print of a Kaffe textile design and on the following day Brandon will lead a needlepoint class in which you'll observe a painting carefully and try to replicate the colours proportionally in wool on a canvas background.     These excercises will teach you powerful lessons on how to use colour effectively and will be invaluable to your wider creative work.

No previous experience is needed to join this class, just a willingness to learn open your eyes to the subtlety and possibilities of colour.
